Q&A with Regal Tent’s HR Manager Kate Woods

Q: When did you begin your career in human resources?

A: In high school I had a co-op placement at the Holiday Inn in the Human Resources Department. I absolutely loved it! It really opened my eyes to what career path I had a passion for. I was hired on after my placement for the summer to assist and provide vacation coverage for the HR Manager at a very young age of 18.

Q: What do you enjoy most about your job?

A: Working with the employees.

Q: What are the main qualities you look for when hiring someone?

A: Their motivation and eagerness to want to work.

Q: How would your best friend describe you?

A: Very outgoing, sarcastic sense of humour, strong, caring, did I mention funny? Haha.

Q: What is your favourite part about working at Regal Tent?

A: Every morning I LOVE coming into work, and I know not many people can say that. Regal has an atmosphere that I have never experienced at a workplace before. If I could pick one thing it would be my coworkers. Being a seasonal company there are some very busy and stressful times of the year, we all know how to work together to help each other out to get our work done. And we also are able to squeeze in some fun as well.

Q: Cheeseburger or hotdog?

A: Cheeseburger for sure! Mustard and extra pickles!!!

Q: How do you define success?

A: I define success by the joy you feel when you do work, finish work or as a result of your work. It doesn’t matter how much money you make, or what position you hold, if you can’t have joy in your work you will never be successful.

Q: What is the toughest part about your job?

A: Terminating employees, or having to do the call to an unsuccessful candidate.

Q: How do you see human resources changing in the next 15 years?

A: I’ve seen huge change in recruitment as we come to a paperless world. All communication is over email rather than in person or on the phone. I see less and less face to face interviews and more video conferences.
